Summary
Mal is a 100-stone man who has lain in bed for 20 years. He wasn't always this way, and the story of how he got here is narrated by his unnamed younger brother, who also records the devastating effect Mal has had on his family since he was a child.
Whitehouse's debut novel is a love story - about how those who love us would destroy us if we let them, and about how those who love us save us, too. That fine line is demarcated by the huge body in the bed, a body that has forced his family into a trailer van in the garden. Once upon a time, Mal was a difficult child, but as he got older, he became more conventional and was adored by Lou, who encouraged him to move away from the smothering love of his mother.See the full content of this document
