The way has been cleared for Peter Mandelson's second big political comeback. Chancellor Gordon Brown has told supporters he no longer wishes to block Mandelson's appointment as the UK's new commissioner at the European Union later this year.

With Brownite MPs now taking a neutral stance, Prime Minister Tony Blair will be encouraged to appoint Mandelson, despite his record of having been ousted from the Cabinet on two occasions.
