HAVING been half way round the globe for a month, perhaps it is understandable that I've come back with a slightly giddy feeling because it seems the world has shifted on its axis. For while I've been away, Steve McClaren has apparently become a shoo-in to be the next England manager.

Maybe it is just a prolonged case of jet-lag, but I'm confused. That would be the same Steve McClaren whose well-resourced Middlesbrough squad currently sit in the bottom half of the Premiership and whose coat was on a shoogly peg at the start of the year following thumpings by Arsenal and Aston Villa.
