TONY McCoy may appear invulnerable at times, but the champion jockey proved he is as human as the rest of us after a heavy fall at Warwick yesterday. McCoy was riding Arnold Layne, the favourite in the totesport. com Classic Chase, when the horse crashed through the 14th fence. McCoy was stretchered to an ambulance before being taken to hospital after initial assessment on his back in the weighing room.

McCoy's condition last night was described as "stable", with a spokesperson for Walsgrave Hospital in Coventry admitting: "He's conscious and talking - but as yet we are not quite sure what his injuries are." In racing, the word Classic usually comes attached with images of three-year-olds galloping across the flatlands of Newmarket, the undulations of Epsom or the long home straight at Doncaster.
