Summary

THERE are times when writers just can't win, even if they are rich and famous and have received prestigious prizes such as the Man Booker and the Whitbread. Take Ian McEwan, who has done pretty well for himself with books of the calibre of On Chesil Beach and Atonement. He's a well-known fellow and a writer of huge talent but last week he found himself mired in a controversy not of his own making.
