Summary
STAFF at SMG's Pacific Quay headquarters were left reeling this week after the high-profile departure of one senior journalist and the firing of several others. Longserving news editor and gundog enthusiast, John Keane resigned last week. SMG press team remained tight-lipped as to the reason for his going but the unexpected nature of the resignation, coupled with the fact Keane worked no notice period, implies there is far more to his leaving than meets the eye. The other firings - the broadcaster's entire Scotsport team - were more predictable. SMG announced it had lost the rights to broadcast premier league football last November so the writing has been on the wall for some time. Nevertheless, the issuing of three- month notice periods was never going to be pleasant and has left the rest of the team at cashstrapped SMG looking around and wondering who might be next.
FRUSTRATED mutterings about "bloody bean-counters" wing their way from the Daily Record this week. It seems that, as part of a general clampdown on office spending, staff have been forbidden from sending letters courtesy of the Royal Mail.
