Tournaments are curious things, existing almost in a separate universe, remote from the rest of the world. Diego Forlan arrived in Argentina for the Copa America having had a disappointing season with Atletico Madrid, dogged by the press following his split with his fiancee, the Argentine model Zaira Nara and with questions over whether, at 32, his career might be drawing to a close. Yet tonight, he could help Uruguay to a record 15th Copa America and it's entirely possible that he might be named Player of the Tournament.

It is the attention devoted to his private life that seems to have hurt Forlan most. "I knew I wouldn't have a problem here," he said, before going on with what was a clear jibe at the La Republica journalist he was addressing. "Things in the Uruguay team are handled in a certain way. The press hasn't harassed me here. No one's stepped out of line and I've been treated with great respect because the people covering the tournament are the sports press."
