It was raining heavily as I arrived at the Glenshee ski area but the sky was a little brighter in the west and I was in optimistic mood. It had been some years since I had wandered in the remote hinterland that is bounded by the Dee in the north, the Tilt in the west and the A93 in the east, but I knew it as typically tumbled Grampian country - heather- covered hills that echo to the plaintive call of the golden plover.

My plan was simple - spend the afternoon traversing An Socach 3,097/944m to Loch nan Eun, where I would camp for the night. In the late afternoon and evening, unencumbered by the pack, I would wander up Beinn Iutharn Mhor, 3,428ft/1,045m before returning to the tent for a late supper. Next morning I would climb Glas Tulaichean, 3,448ft/1,051m, pack up the tent and wander back to Glenshee via the long Carn a'Gheoidh, 3,199ft/975m, ridge. It was a route of about 20 miles, with about 6,500ft of climbing - perfectly feasible for a long summer day.
