fOURTEEN long years. Tense summers, shortened holidays, anxious looks at the calendar, stress about the pre-season schedule. However the coming campaign pans out for Rangers they are going to look back on the 2009 close season as a period of unsurpassed rest and recuperation. For the rst time since 1995 - back in the days when Walter Smith was the manager first time around - they are straight into the group stage of the Champions League without the need for any harrowing pre-qualifiers.

In 2008, Rangers stumbled and staggered to the finishing line at the end of May, losing the title and the Uefa Cup final in a blur of matches and disappointments in the run-in, and they were back a mere twoand-a-half weeks later to start preparing for FBK Kaunas in the Champions League. This time, for some players their break lasted up to six weeks.
