FOR months NEC trawled the world desperately seeking a buyer for its mothballed semiconductor plant in Livingston. Last week, forced to concede defeat, it called off the search and announced plans to raze the plant to the ground.

When the demolition crews move in, more than (pounds) 1 billion worth of investment will disappear in a cloud of dust, leaving behind a sprawling plot of almost 150 acres, one of the largest manufacturing sites in Scotland.

Property experts estimate that at a rough price of (pounds) 200,000 per acre, the land may fetch some (pounds) 30 million. But that still represents a hit of more than (pounds) 970m, with a mix of NEC, property investors and the public sector taking it on the chin.
