GORDON Brown yesterday promised that a fourth-term Labour government would restore the link between pensions and earnings, as he made a blatant pitch to the middle-class voters who hold the key to the election.

Addressing Scottish Labour's spring conference in Glasgow, the Prime Minister said state pensions would rise in line with average earnings from 2012, restoring a link abolished by Margaret Thatcher in 1980.
