The two sides were the giants of Scottish rugby at the time, having between them won seven of the previous eight club championships, and the game was effectively a title decider. Astonishingly, 13 international players - past, present and future - took part in the match.

At Netherdale yesterday, you would have struggled to convince anyone below the age of 30 that the ground once played host to such epic contests. The crowd was perhaps one sixth of what it would have been in the golden era of Gala-Hawick rivalry, and there was not a single capped player in either starting lineup.
