FOR the last few years, I'm afraid I've been drifting away from our national drink.

Let me tell you that I love whisky even though I don't drink it all the time. But enough parodying of Dougie McLean's anthem Caledonia. Having been a wee bit of a stranger to Scotch of late Poundsflirting with Spanish brandies, armagnacs and Caribbean rums) I have been fortunate enough to go on a rehabilitation course with an expert.

My voyage of rediscovery was guided by Arthur Motley, formerly of the Scottish Malt Whisky Society and now a noser and buyer with Royal Mile Whiskies in Edinburgh. Out of respect to my mentor with the unusual surname, I will not make too many references to being part of a Motley crew.
