IN Singapore, technology is king. Its skyline resembles a science- fiction fantasy, all blazing neon, mega skyscrapers and hypercleanliness. It's a place where the future can be glimpsed today. So the city is a fitting host of what some people see as the future of sport, an event dubbed the computer games Olympics - the World Cyber Games.

Last month, 700 competitors from across the globe assembled in the sweltering south-Asian heat to pit their wits and gaming techniques against each other in a series of cyber pugilism. Like the Olympics, competitors entered different disciplines. The eight games featured included FIFA 2005, Halo 2 and Need For Speed. But this isn't a random collective of gaming enthusiasts going on holiday together, this is a very serious business. Competitors had to go through several qualifying rounds to reach this stage. Then there is the money involved.
