ALAN Taylor's Diary is an excellent end-of-paper read: wit and irreverence by the spadeful. Lately, however, I have been irritated, moving on to being downright scunnered, by his persistent use of the term "teuchter" whenever some aspect of Highland life swims into his fastidious Central Belt gaze.
And not just Highland either. Distinctly Scottish targets often attract this unpleasant label. His uneasiness with things Highland was further made obvious when he quoted the Gaelic title of Aonghas Padraig Caimbeul's work (Diary, August 21) and added the dismissive, "don't ask". There Can Be Only One Term for Highlanders Readers Views
For Mr Taylor's information, were he to confront me and refer to me as "teuchter" he would run the risk of, at least, a sharp rejoinder, at worst a good slap. (All right - metaphorical. ) In my book this is no more nor less than a racist put-down.
