An extra 1,200 National Guard troops will arrive at the USA's border with Mexico today, charged with bringing the frontier region under control. The deployment, authorised by President Obama, is a transparent attempt to make his government look tough on illegal immigration. So far, however, he is losing the public relations battle.

Federal Judge Susan Bolton's decision to grant an injunction for the Obama administration against the most controversial aspects of Arizona's new immigration law has only increased the tension. Polls continue to show that a majority of Americans support requiring police officers to check the immigration status of people stopped for minor offences. Arizona's Governor, Jan Brewer, announced that she will appeal the ruling "all the way to the Supreme Court, if necessary".
