Summary


Of all the building blocks which keep the United Kingdom in place, the armed forces are the most durable. They represent the Union at its strongest: their loyalty is to the monarch yet they do the bidding of the Westminster parliament. They are also a great source of national pride. It is not to be wondered that London think- tanks have finally woken up to the notion that independence for Scotland will affect the future of these potent institutions which have their beginnings in the seventeenth century.

No longer can policy wonks or senior commanders hide behind the mantra that independence will never happen and therefore it's not worth discussing. All worthwhile military strategies are based on a thorough examination of all scenarios, known and unknown, and attempt to find solutions to problems which do not even exist at the time. Scotland is now no exception to that inexorable military rule.
