"God loves a trier" - so they say maybe so, but us mere mortals tend to divvy up people into more definite, albeit, harsher categories of "winner" and "loser".
And there's nothing we can't stand more than a loser who gets our hopes up, falls on their arse and then produces a litany of excuses to justify luring everyone into watching the kind of brain-numbing tedium that only a marathon can provide. The marathon, lest we forget, the longest event in athletics and, unless you are the kind of masochist who enjoys sitting in traffic jams, offers absolutely no entertainment value other than the final sprint to the finish line. At least in the London version you can wallow in the schadenfreude of competitors keeling over because they made the ill- advised decision to run 26 miles in a searing heat while dressed as a cartoon character or a pirate or something equally "wacky".See the full content of this document
