NOBODY enjoys a bet more than Alex Salmond. Horses are his preferred punt and - if one's own experience of following his tips is anything to go by - he generally knows what he's talking about. At the beginning of May this year, however, Salmond placed the biggest bet of his life, when he gambled his political future, and that of the SNP - and perhaps Scotland's - in ousting the Liberal Democrats from the northeast seat of Gordon.
It is true to say, of course, that had Salmond not won Gordon he would still have got into Holyrood as a list MSP. But that would have been through the back door and Salmond, the consummate showman, doesn't make those kind of entrances. In any case, it was imperative he win Gordon if the SNP were to have any chance of usurping Labour as Scotland's main party. It was believed to be the 19th winnable SNP seat and, by taking it on personally, Salmond was stating the scale of his ambition.
