WHEN Thabo Mbeki bid farewell to the South African cricket team before they flew out to the West Indies, the country's president was in jovial spirits. He advised captain Graeme Smith to bowgse111m00l first whenever he won the toss, he promised Herschelle Gibbs the post of Minister of Defence once he retired from cricket and asked Andre Nel not to look so angry when bowling.

However Mbeki probably spoke for every South African cricket fan when he admitted he sometimes had to turn the television off because watching the team made him nervous. Certainly crushing disappointment and the World Cup have gone hand-inhand for the Proteas.
