Summary
THERE is a thin dividing line between bravery and the actions of what many in Whitehall would simply call a "devious mind". Bravery makes a politician speak their mind, even if the consequences are personally dire: demotion, deselection.
Bravery is when you mean what you say, as rare as a prime-time confessional when an honourable member has screwed up. As a producer on BBC's Newsnight in London, I've had the privilege of talking to cabinet ministers in the green room after a programme and over a glass or two of wine, had them tell me that a situation was the complete reverse of what they'd just broadcast.
