Profits Boost for Medical Tests Firm

Dundee-based medical tests pioneer Axis-Shield will disclose that it is on the verge of making a long-awaited breakthrough into profits when chief executive Svein Lien announces a 9.5% surge in underlying sales on Thursday.

Analysts believe the director will say that turnover topped (pounds) 25 million in the latest half year and will talk of savings coming through from the reorganisation of its lab division and a planned cut back in research and development expenditure. Dr Erling Refsum at house brokers Nomura said: "I believe it will be good news all round and I am now expecting Axis-Shield to turn cash-flow positive during the second half of this year."
