IT is only fitting that the key figures - the big names, the movers and shakers who influence the great matches - are housed, fed and watered in consummate style out here in Portugal. Uefa have stopped short of recruiting groups of sun-kissed Portuguese virgins to spread rose petals and feed ripe grapes into the mouths of the guys taking part, but only just.

One of the tournament hotels is a lavish facility on the Atlantic coast near Espinho, near Porto. The squad billeted there have it all at their fingertips: a sauna, a jacuzzi, Turkish baths, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, hot and cold running champagne. Mountain bikes are provided for anyone who fancies a quick ride before breakfast, after which they amble along for a morning training session.
