DOWNSTAIRS in the main room of the Mitchell Library the crowds have been milling about at the opening of an exhibition of Patti Smith's artwork, sipping the free champagne and, if they move quick enough, taking the chance to say hello to their idol in the flesh. The main event, however, is up a couple of flights of marble stairs, in the Mitchell's Jeffrey Archive Room, a more intimate, wooden- panelled chamber with a small stage at one end.
