The track that runs up towards the Fannichs from the A835 Garve to Ullapool road follows an enormous pipeline that diverts the water flow over the watershed to Loch Droma and the big Glascarnoch hydro- scheme. It reminded me of the sacrifices that Scotland has made in the name of hydro-power.

Scotland's contribution to the national grid is a generous one, but it comes at a high price. The concrete dams do little to enhance the landscape of the Highlands and most of the reservoirs look unnatural. Whole communities were drowned as lochs were enlarged and glens flooded. Miles of bulldozed tracks were gouged into the wild places and miles upon miles of giant electricity pylons still march their way across some of the most spectacular landscapes in Europe.
