Summary
ANY hunt for the Loch Ness monster needs a suitably atmospheric starting point, and the Ben Wyvis Hotel fits the bill. Staring out from its grassy knoll above the pretty little spa town of Strathpeffer, this old Victorian mansion at first appeared to have a bit of the Bates Motel about it, although the unearthly fog which enveloped us as we arrived soon cleared to leave only warm memories.
Eccentricities of the building such as its labyrinthine layout (including a 32-seat cinema) and the variable temperature in its 92 rooms are soon forgotten when you taste the food from the Jacobite Restaurant - heartfelt fare, with the accent on fresh local produce like beef, game and fish. The bar is stocked with wines and whiskies, which can be enjoyed in front of a roaring log fire. Distilleries, golf courses, castles, and a stunning landscape are within easy driving distance. From GBP70 to GBP190 per room per night.See the full content of this document
