Summary
NOT many things tick all my boxes. And rarely am I so pleasantly surprised by something new that I'm unable to fault it at all. But in the case of Cavens, I really mean it: this is a faultless box- ticker of the highest order. This is the kind of place, especially in these hard times, that you don't mind bigging up. It's the home of the Fordyce family, with just eight rooms, each with its own look, that more than deserve their four-star status. Owner Angus cooks in the kitchen and serves up unpretentious, top-notch local ingredients cooked to perfection. Set on the Solway coast, near Dumfries, this is a part of the country I hadn't been familiar with - but boy, is it worth discovering.
