IT may be July, but there is an unseasonal nip in the air at the athletics track at Pitreavie so Jimmy Bryce suggests we chat in his car. He grabs the steering wheel and hunches over it like a boy racer rather than the septuagenarian he is.

"Don't ever accept a lift from Gemma," he jokes, "because this is how she drives." Gemma Nicol is clearly a young woman intent on going places fast. Yesterday she flew out to the World Junior Championships in Grosseto, Italy. She is the only Scot in the British team and this will be her fourth major championships.
