THIS week's decision by the broadcaster John Suchet to speak out about living with - and not coping with - his wife Bonnie's dementia resulted in a moving and courageous account of living with disease. A youthful man of 64, he was losing, he raged, not a parent or a grandparent but "my life partner, the love of my life".

Prior to her diagnosis three years ago, he'd had the rest of their lives "mapped out together", certain they'd end their days "in each others arms, a bit of Beethoven in the background". Now, he almost wept, Bonnie no longer called him darling or sweetheart, but John.
