It only took a phone call to rekindle some old convictions in Jock Brown. A firm of head- hunters identified him as a candidate for the chairmanship of Dundee, and the invitation to a meeting almost returned him to the heart of the game. The conversations revolved around how he would lead the club, and after attending a match against Falkirk last August as a guest of the board, it was even reported for a time that he had accepted the position.
But he turned it down, and instead he is left with a renewed understanding of why football has been so central to his life for most of his 64 years. He played it - for a Cambridge University team that faced the likes of West Ham reserves, with Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard senior - then reported on it for t he Sunday Post, commentated on it for several broadcasters, and spent 510 days as general manager of Celtic.See the full content of this document
