Summary

LIKE its multi-million-selling predecessor Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is not so much a video game as a period piece. But instead of recreating the shoulder-pads and neon of 1980s Miami, this PlayStation 2 game transports the player into Los Angeles circa 1992 - a time of racial tension and gangsta rap.

The character you control - a young black man called CJ - has returned to his home city to bury his murdered mother. He's immediately picked up by two bent cops (voiced by Samuel L Jackson and Chris Penn) and framed for murdering a cop. Your first task in the game is to return to your neighbourhood on a BMX bike, pedalling like crazy to stay ahead of police cars and rival gang members. From there, the first few hours of the San Andreas experience are spent exploring the enormous 3D playing area, which encompasses three teeming cities - inspired by San Fransisco, Los Angeles and Las Vegas - plus miles of countryside inbetween.
