DO you remember Arthur Andersen, once one of the Big Five international accounting firms before itwentphutduringtheEnron scandal? The American operation, which used to employ 28,000 people, still exists, sort of, but now employs just 200.

The Andersen rump is mainly involved with fighting court actions and not always successfully. Last week it agreed to pay dollars-65 million to shareholders of telecoms company WorldCom over its inability to winkle out the little matter of $11 billion fraud. ("Didn't see any sign of that one in the accounts, did you, Marvin?"
