Seaside Special Is Sarkozy to a Tee

Summary

ONE thing cannot be gainsaid about Nicolas Sarkozy. Whatever faults the Napoleonesque French president might or might not possess he is no slouch when it comes to backing into the limelight. It helps that he has a wife who is easy on the eye but it is not just that Carla Bruni stands him in good stead by providing some arm candy. Sarkozy himself loves to be the centre of attention, even though by grabbing the headlines he gets into all sorts of bother, as he did last week when he unveiled the new presidential aircraft, a plush long-range Airbus 330 with bedroom and hot tub.

Mind you, he might get good use from "Air Sarko", as Parisian wags have dubbed the beast which immediately placed France in the same league as the US, which has Air Force One. Fresh from his triumph pushing through the necessary legislation to raise the age of retirement, Sarkozy has turned his attention once more to an arena in which he feels truly at home - the world stage. Next year he will take over the presidency of the G20 summit and no sooner had the post been confirmed than he announced he will be holding it in Cannes. Not for him the dull routine of capital cities with their anonymous conference centres. He prefers pizzazz and that's what the Mediterranean seaside town will give him.
