NEW schools, community health centres and police and fire stations could be built with the help of private finance for the first time since the SNP came into office, the Sunday Herald can reveal.

While Alex Salmond's administration has long disdained the private finance initiative (PFI) schemes that were the hallmark of its Labour-Liberal predecessor, it has emerged that the forthcoming regional "hubco" scheme to build small-scale public sector buildings will depend to at least some extent on private support.
