THE Gods cursed Achilles with his famously dodgy heel, and it is easy to suspect they were up to the same sort of mischief when they cobbled Rob Dewey together. Having blessed their man with a physique - more than 17st of muscle draped over a 6ft-something frame - that kitted him out perfectly for a career in professional rugby, they then introduced their critical flaw in the form of a suspect left shoulder that twice let him down last season.

Only time will tell whether Dewey has really put those woes behind him, or whether the ligament damage he suffered last October and the dislocation that followed a few months later were simply the first two entries in a catalogue of misfortune that could conspire to deny him the international stardom many believe is his destiny.
