AN attempt to appoint Walter Smith as a director of the Scottish Institute of Sport was vetoed in 2006, it has emerged. Smith, who was then the manager of Scotland, accepted an invitation from Institute chairman Dougie Donnelly to join the board, only for sportscotland chair Julia Bracewell to block the move.
According to Institute sources, Bracewell's refusal to accept Smith's nomination was a source of friction between the heads of Scotland's main sports organisations.
