MANY people in football love a good statistic. They are the guys who sit smugly in pubs and football grounds of a weekend and espouse all manner of facts, figures and equations to explain why so-and-so are certain to score that day, or why such-and-such a team have no hope of accruing anything more than a point at best. It is a wonder these eminent statisticians don't spend all their time at the bookies. Or maybe they do.
