By 1986, when the Games returned to Edinburgh, the decline of Scottish athletics had begun. There were six track and field medals, but only one was gold, won by a young Liz Lynch (McColgan). Moreover, these Games, already tarnished by the involvement of Robert Maxwell, were further devalued by a boycott of 32 African, Asian and Caribbean nations.
