THIS part of the Buffer Zone, you may have noticed, is obsessively anti-war. But our point today is that what we need in this country is a significant increase in defence spending. Or, at least, more resources channelled into one aspect of Britain's armed- forces budget.

As a nation we spend a huge amount of money on waging war but very little on looking after the men and women who return broken from the battlefields. This is perhaps unsurprising since the business of Armed Forces UK plc is to fight and not to be social workers. That would be a bit like asking McDonald's to run weight- watching classes, Coca-Cola to offer dental health schemes, or Marlboro to provide courses on how to get off the fags.
