IN the unforgiving old quest to unearth future Scottish footballing superstars it might just be worth betting on Michael McIndoe. The 24-year-old left-winger successfully completed his rehabilitation from years of drink, drugs and gambling problems this week when he was named as the Nationwide Third Division's player of the year, in recognition of a season which saw him inspire Doncaster Rovers to the league title, notching 10 goals and leading in assists into the bargain. Just one year after he left Yeovil Town for the princely sum of (pounds) 50,000, it is now managers such as Sunderland's Mick McCarthy who are considering whether to gamble on the player for a fee which is unlikely to be far short of (pounds) 1 million.

Originally from the Sighthill area of Edinburgh, McIndoe moved to Luton Town on a football scholarship aged 16, but by the time of his 19th birthday had already accumulated gambling debts of (pounds) 48,000 and spent a month cleaning up his act in the Priory clinic. These days, those considerable energies are merely being devoted towards finding his way into the Premiership, and Berti Vogts' full Scotland side, as quickly as possible.
