Summary


AMONG the current crop of female singers - the ones with careers made by Radio 2 and the people who purchase one album a year - there's no-one worthy of the crown they all so evidently chase. The likes of Katie Melua (almost entirely a creation of Mike Batt, the Tory-supporting creator of the Wombles theme) and Joss Stone (mentored by soul singer Betty Wright) are young and unformed.

While they can sing, they've as much real personality as wet dishrags, which is arguably why they've been so successful: people, and the record industry, are put off by the odd and the individual, unless they have a proven track record.
