The location at which I was given this instruction was a romantic country house in the Scottish Borders where I was a weekend guest. Before conclusions are jumped at, I should point out that the activity which necessitated panting was a singing lesson.

The lady issuing the instruction was Sally Burchell, a mezzo soprano of some note who has forsaken the international opera stage and concert hall to run music courses at Fairlaw House near Auchencrow, a few miles north of the English border.
