RUSSIAN president Vladimir Putin has sent a warning shot against US foreign policy by suspending participation in a key arms treaty limiting the number of tanks and aircraft in Europe.

Putin's move yesterday, suspending Russia's role in the Conventional Forces in Europe (CFE) treaty, is seen as the most determined sign yet of Moscow's objection to US plans to site the proposed Star Wars missile defence system in the former Warsaw Pact territories of Poland and the Czech Republic.
