GABRIELLE Bonheur" Coco" Chanel was part fashion icon, part enigma. The elfin figure, the ever-present cigarette, the short black hair and the shocking red lips all helped to create a formidable fashion persona. She was the creative genius behind the little black dress, casual jackets, quilted handbags, sportswearas- daywear and expensive costume jewellery. But her willingness to fabricate elements of her past means that fact and fiction continue to merge in her biographies. Depending on which of those you read, she was a cabaret singer, a milliner or a tailor's assistant. She was also said to be incredibly superstitious and the lover of a German spy.

Chanel was born in 1883 in a poorhouse in the small French city of Saumur. Her mother died when she was 12( although Chanel always disputed this, and cited her own birth date as 1893). Her father took her to a convent to be brought up by nuns, and it was here that she learned to sew.
