CELLTECH, Britain's largest biotechnology group, agreed to a (pounds) 1.5 billion takeover by the Belgian pharmaceutical group UCB. The cash offer could bring to an end the dream of a British firm rivalling the US businesses that lead the biotech field.

BAA, the world's largest airport operator, reported an 8.7% surge in second-half profits on higher passenger traffic. Its airports handled 61.3 million passengers during the six months. Meanwhile British Airways is reaping dividends from cost cuts. It reported a doubling in profits for the year to March despite falling revenues - but fears rising fuel prices will hurt.
