THE days of the traffic jam are numbered, thanks to a consortium of European scientists who plan to create a huge automobile internet that will allow vehicles to tell each other - and their drivers - about bad weather, slow downs, accidents and other traffic problems.

The initiative is being steered by the Car2Car Communication consortium that includes Network on Wheels, a research project from the University of Mannheim, and FleetNet, a DaimlerChrysler backed research project.
