THE regular grumbling point among Edinburgh musos is that the city doesn't have a decent spread of live music venues. And yet something unusual is definitely brewing along the east end of Princes Street.

The Voodoo Rooms, a three-bar, two-stage space above the Cafe Royal has, since last November, played host to Barry Adamson, David Holmes, Don Letts, Basquiat Strings, Guru's Jazzmatazz, the Steve Reid Ensemble and Devon Sproule alongside regular open mic events, new band showcases, club nights and burlesque cabarets. But it was a one-off January gig by jazz saxophonist Pharoah Sanders in a room that comfortably ts around 180 people that really made the public sit up and take notice of the new venue.
