THERE have already been moments in this World Cup when Stephen Appiah has had to pinch himself. The sight and sounds of German fans chanting "Ghana, Ghana" during matches has been one. He asked a teammate what was generating such a response and the answer was simple: "We're playing good football, that is why."

Ghana's captain, who scored the penalty against the USA which put the debutants into the second round, knows about the weight of expectation. Back home in Accra, the nation's capital, the entire population seemed to empty onto the streets to celebrate the team's progress to the knockout stages.
