CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown has had a mixed reaction to his idea for a national day to celebrate all that is best about Britain in the 21st century.

In a speech calling for a "strong modern sense of patriotism", Brown said Britain lacked a unifying day like the US's Independence Day or July 14 in France. He urged Labour supporters to "embrace the Union flag" as the banner of British values of "tolerance and inclusion".
