Peter Whiteford's hopes of landing his maiden European Tour triumph at the Andalucia Open were dealt a blow yesterday when the driver he thought had solved his problems off the tee with went missing from his bag an hour before his tee-off time.

Under the circumstances, the 29-year-old from Kirkcaldy did well to score a three-under-par 67 for a 10-under aggregate of 200 that leaves him in joint fifth place, four shots behind South African leader Louis Oosthuizen, but he declared himself an "angry man" at the end of his round over Malaga's Parador course.
